The 100 commodities that travel most by air cargo

Air cargo carries less than 1% of world trade by volume and more than a third by value. It is reserved for what is urgent, valuable or perishable.

According to IATA, less than 1% of world trade by volume travels by air, but about 35% by value. Air freight costs more per kilo, so it pays off when the goods are worth a lot, expire soon or stop an operation if they do not arrive.

These are the 100 commodities most often moved by air, grouped by the reason that justifies the flight.

Frequently asked questions

What clients ask us most

When does it make sense to ship by air?
When the goods are high-value, urgent or perishable, or when a delay costs more than the freight: a stopped production line, a grounded aircraft, a launch with a fixed date or a medicine that expires.
Which goods are restricted on aircraft?
Dangerous goods: lithium batteries, dry ice, aerosols, chemicals, perfumes or radioactive material. They travel under the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations, with specific packaging, labels and a declaration, and some are accepted only on freighter aircraft.
How is air freight charged?
By chargeable weight: the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight (length by width by height in centimeters, divided by 6,000). A light but large box pays for the space it takes up.
What does AOG mean?
Aircraft on Ground: an aircraft that cannot fly until it receives a spare part. It is the top priority in air cargo; the part leaves on the first available flight or with an on-board courier.
