Air Freight by Industry: Who Imports and Exports by Air in Mexico
An assembler waiting on chips, a lab that needs reagents before they expire, a grower with mangoes ready for Japan: all three solve the problem the same way, because every day without the cargo costs more than the air freight.
According to IATA, air carries less than 1% of world trade by volume but around 35% by value. That 35% isn't abstract: it has industry names. This guide looks at air freight by industry and by direction: who imports into Mexico by air, who exports from Mexico by air, what triggers the decision to fly, which service level each case needs and what it costs not to fly.
If you're after the list of goods that travel by air and how to choose between plane and ship, that's in what goods ship by air cargo. Here the starting point is your industry.
Service levels, one line each
- General cargo: scheduled flight with booked space, for valuable cargo without a critical arrival time.
- Express or next flight out: priority on the first flight with space.
- Charter: a dedicated aircraft, for pieces that don't fit a scheduled flight or volumes that can't wait.
- On-board courier: a person carries the part as checked baggage; for small, ultra-urgent items.
- Cold chain: qualified thermal packaging or an active container, with temperature recording.
Transit times are always estimates: they depend on routing, connections, season and customs clearance.
Importing by air: who flies cargo into Mexico
Electronics and telecom
Technology and telecom OEMs and electronics assembly plants import microchips, semiconductors and microprocessors. They fly because of their value per kilo and because a shortage stops the assembly line.
Typical service level: scheduled general cargo for replenishment, express when there's a shortage. Key requirements: high declared value, cargo insurance available for the real value, anti-static packaging and accurate tariff classification.
Phone and tablet assembly and distribution
Electronics assemblers and retail distributors import mobile phones, tablets and communications equipment. A commercial date rules here: a launch or a peak season. We know this space up close: we relocated the mobile phone production line of Sagem, the French communications equipment group, and have shipped mobile phones and computer equipment.
Service level: general cargo or express, with ground security. Key requirement: nearly all of these devices carry lithium batteries, declared as dangerous goods depending on whether they're installed in the equipment, packed with it or shipped loose. See our guide to shipping high-value electronics.
Genomics and molecular diagnostics
Biological research labs and genomics companies import molecular diagnostic kits, sequencing reagents and lab consumables. Many reagents have short shelf lives and travel chilled or frozen; if a kit arrives out of range, it's useless.
Service level: cold chain with temperature records and, when the reagent requires it, dry ice declared as dangerous goods. Key requirements: COFEPRIS health permits when the product counts as a health supply in Mexico, a safety data sheet and documents ready before departure.
Pharma: vaccines, biologics and blood products
Global pharmaceutical companies and authorized distributors import vaccines and biologics at 2–8 °C and products that travel deep frozen. The manufacturer sets the temperature range, and the operation has to prove it with end-to-end records.
Service level: cold chain with qualified passive packaging or an active container, plus ramp priority. Key requirements: COFEPRIS health permits in the importer's name, good distribution practices and temperature loggers. Blood products and plasma are controlled goods: we move them only on behalf of companies that already hold the permits, with specialized operators; the permits belong to the holder. For temperature ranges by product, see products that need cold chain and our cold chain logistics service.
Aviation: airlines, MROs and AOG
Commercial airlines, maintenance, repair and overhaul shops (MROs) and charter operators import urgent aircraft components for a grounded aircraft, the well-known AOG (aircraft on ground).
Service level: next flight out, on-board courier for small parts, or charter when nothing else arrives in time. Key requirements: the release certificate and traceability the shop asks for, and checking whether the part is dangerous goods.
Exporting by air: who flies cargo out of Mexico
Central labs: clinical trial samples
Central clinical labs and research centers export clinical trial biological samples to testing labs abroad. What triggers air is sample stability: hours or a few days, under controlled conditions.
Service level: express with cold chain, sometimes with dry ice. Key requirements: these are controlled goods. We move them only on behalf of institutions that already hold the permits, with specialized operators; export and import permits belong to the holder.
Premium fresh produce for Europe and Japan
Agricultural exporters serving premium markets fly high-value fresh mangoes, asparagus and papayas. Buyers in those markets pay for fruit with more shelf life on arrival, and ocean transit doesn't always deliver it.
Service level: perishable general cargo with pre-cooling, cut-off times met and minimal ramp dwell. Key requirements: a phytosanitary export certificate, the destination country's admissibility requirements and, for some products and markets, prior treatments or inspections.
Automotive Tier 1: urgent wire harnesses
Tier 1 automotive suppliers feeding assembly plants export wire harnesses by air when truck or ocean can no longer make it in time. A shortage can stop the customer's line and trigger penalties.
Service level: express or charter, depending on volume and destination. Key requirements: export paperwork ready before the truck reaches the airport, and direct delivery coordinated with the plant. When the urgent item is a machinery spare part, the logic is the same: see urgent spare parts to Mexico.
Disposable medical devices
Medical supply manufacturers certified for export ship catheters, cannulas and sterile disposables. They fly because of value and supply commitments to hospitals and distributors.
Service level: general cargo or express, temperature-controlled if the manufacturer requires it. Key requirements: the destination country's registration or authorization in the holder's name, destination-compliant labeling and packaging that preserves sterility.
Aerospace: Querétaro, Sonora and beyond
Manufacturers in Mexico's aerospace cluster, with hubs in states such as Querétaro and Sonora, export gas turbine parts and blades. These are high-value, tight-tolerance pieces.
Service level: scheduled general cargo, or charter for large pieces. Key requirements: custom crating with shock and tilt indicators, documentary traceability of the part and a check of export control classification where applicable.
Table: industry, product and service level
| Industry | Product | Service level | Key requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Electronics and telecom (import) | Chips and semiconductors | General / express | Declared value and insurance |
| Phones and tablets (import) | Phones and tablets | General / express | Lithium batteries |
| Genomics and diagnostics (import) | Kits and reagents | Cold chain | COFEPRIS and dry ice |
| Pharma (import) | Vaccines and biologics | Cold chain 2–8 °C / deep freeze | COFEPRIS and temperature records |
| Aviation and MRO (import) | AOG parts | Next flight / courier / charter | Part traceability |
| Central labs (export) | Clinical samples | Express, cold chain | Holder's permits |
| Agricultural exports (export) | Mango, asparagus, papaya | Perishable general cargo | Phytosanitary certificate |
| Automotive Tier 1 (export) | Wire harnesses | Express / charter | Arrival time |
| Medical devices (export) | Catheters and cannulas | General / express | Registration at destination |
| Aerospace (export) | Turbine parts and blades | General / charter | Custom crating |
What it costs not to fly
The useful question isn't what air freight costs, but what each day without the cargo costs. Every industry has its own name for it:
- Line down in electronics and automotive: idle staff, lost shifts and customer penalties.
- Aircraft on ground in aviation: canceled flights and rebooked passengers.
- Spoilage in fresh produce: every day in transit is a day less on the shelf at destination.
- Out-of-range product in pharma and diagnostics: a batch that can no longer be used.
- Invalid sample in clinical trials: lost data and a patient who has to be called back.
With that cost in hand, the comparison with air freight becomes simple.
