What is a Mexican pedimento and who signs it?

Kold Gold team · FAQ Kold Gold

We are a forwarder outside Mexico and our client is importing into Mexico for the first time. They ask for "the pedimento". What is it, who prepares it and what do they need from us?

The pedimento is Mexico's customs entry: the declaration that tells customs what goods are entering or leaving, their tariff classification, value, origin and the duties and taxes paid. It is prepared and electronically signed by a licensed Mexican customs broker on behalf of the importer or exporter.

At Kold Gold, clearance is handled by an allied customs broker and we coordinate the whole Mexico leg. To prepare the pedimento you usually need: commercial invoice, packing list, transport document (B/L, air waybill or bill of lading for trucking), a technical description of the product to classify it and, where applicable, certificates of origin or permits.

What helps most from origin: precise descriptions (material, use, model) and invoice data that match the transport document.
